Sights and Sounds from the Rugby Pitch

Sights and Sounds from the Rugby Pitch

A windy April evening, the green fields of Crofton, the sound of the referee’s whistle, the roar of the crowd, the thump of running feet on hard ground and the rip of tags from belts. This year’s Y4 Tag-Rugby Partnership kicked off with five teams ready to do battle to take home the trophy. Lofthouse Gate, Horbury St. Peters, Heath View, Sharlston and St.Ignatius all brought players, teachers, coaches and supporters ready to show their stuff. With this year’s tournament rules changed to rugby league the teams quickly equal each other out. Some top quality defending saw all the teams recording 1-1, and 2-2 draws in the opening rounds. Some creative thinking was required and the later rounds saw this. Early hopefuls Horbury St. Peter's and Lofthouse Gate demonstrated some fantastic attacking with quick passing and fast running while St.Ignatius began showing their determination to get over the line. Sharlston’s never say die attitude was a great credit to them coming back time and time again. But Heath View Primary with some brilliant defence and fast attacking play managed to collect two wins and two draws to declare themselves partnership champions. A great evening of tag- rugby, brilliant players, outstanding refereeing thanks to the students of Wakefield College and pupils of Crofton High School and some wonderful support from all the spectators. A great advert for our partnership and for rugby.

Well done everybody!

Happy days Steve

Partnership Netball Finals

Partnership Netball Finals – Kettlethorpe High School

At last the sun was shining for the Sports Partnership netball finals, which had previously been cancelled due to freezing cold weather, wind and rain! Seven teams were entered into two leagues. The tournament took the ‘High Five’ format, with all the pupils having a job to do, ranging from performer, centre pass marker, score keeper and timer. I almost felt redundant! It was the first time that a tournament had taken place with the full rotation system and rules enforced. The pupils took their roles very seriously and enjoyed being fully involved, particularly those not playing!

An excellent standard of netball was played. This was expected as all the teams entered were winners in their own right, having previously won their cluster rounds. Jerry Clay Lane dominated League 2, winning all of their games and scoring ten goals in the process whilst only conceding two! They took the maximum ten points to win the group whilst St. Ignatius came a close second, with six points.

Essentially Dance

It was far better than the television event - 28 teaching staff all dancing the quick step around the hall at Denhale Community Centre.

The Partnership provided a full day of training, the last of four days, to teach all the essential dances to staff across our schools.

There was some fantastic footwork and now the teachers can take these moves back into the schools and get the pupils dancing.

The dances were suitable to deliver from year one through to year eleven.  Watch out for dancing appearing in your school.

PE course for Teaching Assistants

Eleven adults walked into the course yesterday morning, some with a certain amount of anxiety at what may await them.  This was the first of five days to help teaching assistants develop their PE knowledge.  The day included a session on theory to try to understand more and then progressed to warm ups, cool downs and multi-skills.  The group thoroughly enjoyed the day and gave super feedback.  Over the following four days they will cover gym, games, dance, OAA and athletics.  They stated the day had been full of great ideas to take back into PE lessons.

Get Pedalling!

The first Bikeability course has just been delivered by the Sports Partnership to nearly 30 pupils at St Pauls, Alverthorpe.  The children were given a day and a half of training in groups of ten to enable them to go out onto the roads and cycle safely.

Clad in cycling helmets and high visibility yellow vests, they were taught all the essential safety information and then taken onto the roads to practice all the manoeuvres needed to negotiate junctions, etc

The children really enjoyed the course and should now be safe to let loose!

Other schools have also signed up to the scheme.

Teachers are G and T

26 teachers from the primary schools took part in a course last week to learn more about Gifted and Talented children in PE and sport.  The course gave staff a means to identify these children in school and a whole load of activities to use in the process.  The teachers were able to experience the tasks for themselves and took away a fantastic resource pack full of practical activity ideas.  Watch out children - some of these tasks are tough!

Leadership Academy

The Leadership Academy has just been launched to give forty young leaders the chance to utilise and develop their skills.  Four young people from each high school will be assigned a mentor from Wakefield College.  The mentor will be themselves a student with advanced leadership skills who will support the leaders in the secondary school.  The idea is for this team to introduce at least one new sports club into their school.  This will contribute to expanding the number of pupils accessing three hours PE and sport on the school site.

The leaders will sign up for Youth Sports Trust 'Step into Sport Passport' which enables young people to verify their voluntary hours and gain certification.

Virtual Events

Children in Key Stage One are currently taking part in a multi-skills event in their schools.  The event sees them complete a circuit of eight activities where, in teams, they try to score as many points as possible.  They compete against their classmates in an intra-house style festival.  The results from each school are then sent to the Competition Manger who works out which school has the most points.  This then becomes an  inter-school event without the schools actually meeting - i.e. a virtual event.  The winning school will be announced later in the term and certificates and a trophy will be awarded.  Work hard for your school everyone!

School Sports Coaching

Money has been made available by the Youth Sports Trust to put more sports coaches into schools.  The external coaches are initially targeting secondary schools to try to increase the range of after school clubs available.  This is another mechanism to help all young people access three hours of activity a week at school.  The intention is to try and offer new or different sports to attract children who would not normally stay behind to do just that.  Let's hope everyone can find something they like.

Olympic Links

In the countdown to 2012, all schools are being offered the chance to link with a school abroad.  Sports partnerships are choosing a country which has previously hosted the Olympics.  We have opted for Canada and all PLTs have been contacted with a chance to join the scheme.  Just think of the possibilities of partnering with a school in Canada!

Murrayfield Action!

Murrayfield Action!Three members of the SSCO team had the good fortune to make it to Murrayfield last weekend.  Mrs Foster, Mr Biltcliffe and Miss Hopkinson play touch rugby through the summer season as part of the Wakefield Wildcats work in the community.  Their team had chance to represent the Wildcats in a Tag tournament before the mian Super league matches started.  Each Super-league team was represented in the tag event and a celebrity player from the past starred in each team.  Although we did not go through to the finals, it was a great competition and we then went into the stadium to watch the games.  At half time in the Wakefield V Bradford match, all the tag teams were invited down onto the pitch side to do a lap of honour - what a great experience!  There were 34,000 people cheering us on!......

Foot after foot, mile after mile.

Foot after foot, mile after mile.Just to say a big thank you to everybody who text, phoned, asked and tried to watch for me on the television this year in the London Marathon. It was incredibly hot again right from the word go. I started well with a good steady pace and crossed Tower Bridge (13 miles) without even thinking about it. Then suddenly just after mile 14 both my knees stopped bending and it was a long way to the finish. Completed the 26.2 miles in 4 hours 18 minutes which is the same time I did three years ago with a duck on my head. Will I do it again. Mmmmm! I have visited the website twice…Happy days Steve

Tai Chi comes to Denhale ARC

Tai Chi comes to Denhale ARC

A wonderful training day for Tai Chi was held at the Denhale ARC.  Betty Sutherland from Leeds came with her team to a fantastic training day for our partnership schools.

The exercise is for the body and mind.  The programme for youth is based on the Chinese Martial Art of Tai Chi Chuan and Qigong for health.  The programme includes techniques to develop a healthy mind and body.

Schools that have increased the time spent on games and exercise have found; attendance goes up, behaviour improves and pupils become healthier and confidence grows.

In accordance with the aims of the Healthy Schools initiative, UK Tai Chi offers a mulit disciplined programme of Tai Chi and Qigong, specifically designed for young people.

  • The programme contains exercises for mind and body, to help improve concentration and attention levels.
  • Regular practice will improve general health and wellbeing
  • The programme provides an opportunity for all pupils to particiapte in a traditional but innovative form of exercise for schools.
  • Tai Chi breaks down barriers and encourages pupils who normally dislike, or who are culturally exempt from mainstream sports.
  • Tai Chi can be practised anywhere/anytime.  Parents as well as carers, teachers would benefit from being involved in this art.

The course was a resounding success and further CPD opportunities will be provided for those who attended.

Table Tennis INSET

Table Tennis INSETTable Tennis Workshop

On Wednesday 11th March, Competition Managers from across Yorkshire converged on Ossett School for a table tennis workshop. This was delivered by Mark Willerton, the Yorkshire Regional Development Officer for ETTA.

After a brief quiz on table tennis which was used to assess our prior knowledge (the men won), the remainder of the workshop was mostly practical.

Mark demonstrated, with the help of his “able assistant” Andy Nelson, how to hold the blade (bat) correctly along with the different shots and serves. This led into some competitive games, using the rules and scoring as laid out by ESTTA and the Butterfly More Schools’ Project.

Essential Dance is a company working with Darren and Lilia from Strictly Come Dancing.

Our partnership is one of the few pilot schools in the Country running the programme.  40 staff attended the first day, where they leant 4 routines at beginners level, the cha cha cah, the jive, quickstep and waltz.

There was such a buzz around the room as the teachers developed their skills and confidence. The tutors Lorraine, Tim and Sue were outstanding.  The next training session is set for September, so it is hoped teachers from now and till then will be donning their dancing shoes!!

Comments made from staff

Partnership Wake Up Shake Up festival

Partnership Wake Up Shake Up festival

The inaugural partnership 'Wake Up Shake Up' competition was held at Outwood Grange College on a very cold and snowy afternoon.

It was such a good turn out by the pupils and staff and sequins, face paints and pom poms were the norm!

Each school had 5 areas that they were being assessed on. 1.- How they perform in time to the music, 2.- Pupils work in time with each other, 3.- Pupils show good body tension/extension where appropriatem 4. - Pupils are smartly presented 5. - Pupils work with energy showing a good level of fitness.

The standard of competition was very high which made the job of the 3 judges extremely difficult.  The music choice was also brilliant from Toni Basil to Britney Spears! The atmosphere was electric.

The pupils performed in the Conference Theatre. It has stadium type seating which allowed all supporters to see.

Yoga for Schools

Despite the snow the majority of attendees made it into the 'Yoga for Schools' training day.

Trish Munro made us feel very welcome as we arrived at the Denhale ARC (after our stressful journeys) with a cup of tea and the lovely scent of candles.

The course comprised of 4 routines.  All participants learnt the moves by breaking down the routine into sections by Trish demonstrating, then working through the CD.  Each person got their own resource which showed exactly what we covered.

Overall the day was excellent, despite the weather.  The staff evaluations proved very positive with many wanting to action their plans immediately.

OUTWOOD Football league on hold

Making sporting links

Making sporting linksWith warm ups, multi-skills drills, throwing and catching skills and cool downs all planned, thirty coaching students from Wakefield College set out on a week’s PE teaching in six schools across Crofton and City clusters. The students designed multi-skills lessons suitable for year 1 children and throwing and catching skills for year 3 and 4. Glowing reports were returned from all of the schools with teachers and headteachers congratulating the students on their professional approach and encouraging attitude towards everything they did. And as for the children they just simply loved it all. A big well done to all the students involved for their fun and enjoyable lessons. Check out the pictures from St. Mary’s primary and Greenhill J & I. Also follow the City link to read about the wonderful year 1 festival that the students put on for the children of Heath View, Pinders Primary and Greenhill. Happy days Steve.......

HAPPY NEW YEAR

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Welcome back to one and all!  I do hope that you had a lovely holiday and a well earned break.

This term sees some excellent progress for sports coaching in secondary schools.  By working with 'Service 2 Sport' the Outwood Grange College Sports Partnership are in a position to place a new coach in all our partner schools for our most gifted and talented students.

We also welcome all our PLTs back into College for a review meeting based around the new PESSYP strategy.  Every PLT has the chance to sign up to a workshop based on areas of need.

Our link work with Wakefield College is also ongoing by providing College Sports Managers into the secondary schools to help support social leagues for students who may not currently particapate in after school sports activities.

A Midnight Football League will also start on the site of Outwood Grange College in February.

I am also delighted to inform you that the Partnership has retained its Partnership Mark, which is a great boost for all your hard work in supporting the partnership.

Thank you and Happy-Sporty New Year!

'ACTIVEMARK' AND 'SPORTSMARK' AWARDS 2008

My Congratulations goes to all the schools who have achieved the 'Activemark' or 'Sportsmark' Award for 2008. The criteria for schools this year was:

  • At least 90% or more of pupils across the school were doing at least 2 hours of PE and sport a week.

64 out of 69 schools within our partnership were successful in achieving this. I am absolutely delighted that those schools who have achieved the award have gained national recognition in your support of our sports partnership.

Well Done again!

Year 3 Benchball Partnership Final

Year 3 Benchball Partnership FinalWednesday evening saw the first of this year’s partnership final kick off to a roar of noise. Eight teams from across the Wakefield district passed, moved, challenged and battle to take home that all important partnership trophy. The competition was divided into two pools with the winner of each meeting for a head to head in the final. Pool one saw South Parade and St. Mary’s challenging for the top stop with the place not decided until the last game. With Lofthouse Gate and The Mount taking joint third, South Parade over powered St. Mary’s 6 – 1 to take their place, but who against? Pool 2 was a very much closer affair with three teams battling for the top spot. In the end Shay Lane took it with Sandal Endowed and Horbury Bridge coming a close second and English Martyrs third. The final continued in the same way with both Shay Lane and South Parade scoring one goal each after seven minutes of play. The match continued until the tenth minute with some fast passing from South Parade saw them snatch victory and take home the Partnership trophy. A brilliant evening, big thank you to all the players, supporters and teachers. Last but not least our hard working sports leaders who without there help none of this would have happen. Happy days Steve......

West Yorkshire Leadership Conference

38 of our best sports leaders from across the whole partnership spent the day at John Chales Centre for Sport in Leeds on the 11th November.

The students were selected by their PE staff based on their leadship experience and commitment to helping out at school.

Each student followed their own personalised learning course based around areas of interest to them.

As transport was shared it was lovely to see so many different schools from the same partnership working as a team.  It is hoped that these studnets will go onto volunteer and gain valuable qualifications in the near future.

OnBoard Scheme off to a sailing start

OnBoard Scheme off to a sailing start

What a marvellous afternoon spent with the wind blowing through ones' hair or alternatively a dunking in Pugneys.

Thanks to Liz McDonald from the OnBoard scheme at Pugneys who kindly invited our partnership to a taster session of windsurfing and sailing.

There was a very good turn out from our partnership and everyone did us proud.  My top marks certainly went to Karen, Jo and Jayne who braved the windsurfing, giggles were heard for miles!

The idea of the taster session was to display what the OnBoard scheme could offer and how we can develop this link for our students. Already a number of staff have created new links and bids are currently being written to fund such a new opportunity for our youngsters.

Thank you to all the PLTs and SSCos for a great PLT day on Friday 12th September.

The day was made special due to a new section titled the 'above and beyond award'.  To learn more about the winners click onto a cluster.

The practical elements of the day seem to go down well, with OAA kindly led by Jayne Hopkinson, Rock-it-Ball led by Steve Biltcliffe, Cheerleading (minus the pom poms, but what great fun anyway) with Nina Lancaster and finally Kevin Barraclough who came especially to introduce New Age Kurling.

Liz MacDonald gave a wonderful speech about the OnBoard scheme at Pugneys and offered a free teacher session.

To Australia and back

To Australia and backThe things people get up to in their holidays. With an experience of a lifetime before them ten members of our partnership were given the opportunity to fly to South Australia to observe PE in secondary and primary schools in Adelaide with a focus on gifted and talented. With three clear objectives the party explored how physical education fitted into the Australian curriculum, what provision is made for gifted and talent pupils and how those pupils are identified. Following visits to two secondary schools, one specialising in volleyball and the other in tennis, a specialist gymnastics primary school and a main stream primary the party returned with a number of interesting conclusions, which will be published in due course. The trip was an amazing experience, the people so welcoming, the schools so inviting and of course lots of opportunities to experience the culture and atmosphere of South Australia’s capital city and its surrounding area. Summer Sports Jam is underway

Summer Sports Jam is underway

What a great first day of Sports Jam!  For once the weather really did make the day feel like summer had finally arrived.

Over 80 children are involved in doing different sports activities, new sports this camp are mini squash, kick-boxing and street dance.

The camp runs for two concurrent weeks and places are still available.

We welcome many young leaders who volunteer on the camp. Their role is to guide the children round each activitiy and help them throughout the day.  Many of the sports leaders had to apply this year for the positions.

We also acknowledge Kassie Roper who, for many years has also been a volunteer sports leader on the Camp, but now we welcome her back as a coach and first aider! Well done Kassie.

STARKEY G&T DEVELOPMENT DAY

STARKEY G&T DEVELOPMENT DAY

The best deaf and hard of hearing athletes in Yorkshire were invited to a development day on the 19th July at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield.  These World Class facilities were provided by England Athletics.

The athletes were given ‘I am a future elite athlete’ t-shirt by the hearing aid manufacturer and event sponsor, Starkey.  Starkey designed the wonderful t-shirts to empower the youngsters into wanting to continue to do athletics.

The day began by a presentation by the Director of Deaf UK Athletics, Brian Kokoruwe.  He showed a clip of the Deaflympics DVD of 2005.  He went onto tell the group about how Deaf UK Athletics had started, how people get involved and the success they had achieved as a non profit, voluntary organisation.

The athletes were then split into event groups and spent over an hour being specially trained by top England Athletics Coaches, Pete Moore, Shelley Quarin, Karen Buck and Susan Lawal. One father said ‘ He has instantly doubled his distance in discus after only 1 coaching point.’

Gifted & Talented Day with Wakefield College

Gifted & Talented Day with Wakefield College

12 pupils from Year 7 & 8 from our secondary partnership schools were invited to our second G&T day.  Wakefield College provide the venue and tutors to deliver 4 workshops for the young athletes.

Sporting Champions provided us with James Williams to open the day. James Wiliams is the Regional Team Leader for Sporting Champions in Yorkshire and grew up in Huddersfield.

James first got involved in fencing when he was in the army.  He has represented GB at the Olympics and won several titles placing him as an all time British Great!

James delivered a wondeful speech on how he became involved in sport and totally motivated the group. A number of students asked great questions of James.

The students followed 4 workshops throughout the day, Sports Psychology, Diet and Nutrition, SAQ and Team Building.  Many of the students commented on the facts given in the Diet and Nutrition lecture, Becky from Horbury said, ' I have learnt about what things to eat for certian sports', and Joe said 'How to be healthy with my food'. Laura from Kettlethorpe said 'I have learnt lots of stuff about psychology and how to deal with stress when I get frustrated'.

Mr Hulme, from Ossett School also gave a very infromative presentation on goal setting and  gave many useful tips.

Thank you to the staff who attended the day and Mel, Katie, Tina, Matt, Wayne, Nichola, Steve, James and Jamie, James and Sporting Champions.

School to Club Links

As you may be aware Gordon Brown (yes! the PM) would like more of our youngsters to participate in at least 5 hours of physical exercise per week.

The OGC sports partnership have been very busy working on Head Teachers to establish at least 2 hours of curriculum PE and many of the partner schools are achieving this.

That leave us with the other 3 hours!! Many children participate in clubs and the OGCSP are trying to make formal links with local clubs to ensure your children know about their local sports opportunities.  The sports clubs then work with the OGCSP to target groups and help raise participation.

Daniel Majid has been working on formalising this link so that it is easier for you to know when and where to go for sport.  The first 4 links that have been made are with; Wakefield School of Tennis, Wakefield Harriers, Nactics Martial Arts and Street Dance and Wakefield Phoenix Netball Club.

Please go to the 'links' section for the relevant info on each of the clubs so you can see their home page too.

Bring on the 5 hours!!

FIRST DIRECT Minilympic Day

FIRST DIRECT Minilympic Day

What an amazing day!  Just over 2000 students from all our partnership primary schools descended on Thornes Park.  FIRST DIRECT sponsored the day and provided all the sports leaders with very smart t-shirts and goodie bags for all the compeitiors.  Jo Bedford, Head of Recruitment at FIRST DIRECT opened the first session of activites.

The wonderful sports leaders from Kettllethorpe, Outwood, Ossett, St Thomas a Beckets, Cathedral, Crofton, City and Horbury were the true stars of the show.  They led the Year 6 pupils to their events from the coaches, warmed them up, displayed the activities, coached and supported them throughout the day.  Without them we certainly couldn't have managed the event. BIG THANKS.  The winners of outstanding leaders have been posted on the schools home page...go see! The winners were singled out by their teachers due to their extra hard work. FIRST DIRECT gave each winner a voucher as a prize.

The Mayor of Wakefield closed the Day.  Despite all the rain intermitent throughout the day, it did not dampen the spirits of the competitors.  Read on to find the winners for each session. The Outwood Grange College Samba Band also gave us all something to jig along to, they craeted a great vibe!

Wakefield Express have covered the event and will feature in tomorrows paper, there will also be a slide show and video on their website, THANKS for your support Emma and Wakefield Express! Thank you also to Charlie Keith, the main man on the mic and Sport and Active Lifestyles for the use of the facilities.

Tennis Skills to Music

Tennis Skills to Music

Staff attended a wonderful 'Tennis Skills to Music' course devised and led by Jill Follett.

Staff participated in practical activiites that were progressive and challenging.  The concept of delivering this course in a small space with little equipment impressed the teachers about being able to duplicate their new found skills in a real life situation.

Comments made form the evaluations were; 'Brilliant new ideas that can be applied to the teaching of most skills in PE', 'this will help me introduce tennis throughout the school in a fun manner' and 'As an NQT I have found it very useful and will affect my practice in many ways'.

Thank you Denhale ARC for a great facility and food from Moira and her team at Outwood Grange College!

An addition to the team

An addition to the team

There is a welcome addition to the sports partnership in the guise of Daniel Majid. Daniel is joining us to help with school to club links.

Daniel has been phoning all our local sports clubs that Jayne Hopkinson had previously found for all our pupils within the partnership.  Daniel is requesting that local clubs volunteer data on the schools that their club members attend and what age group they are in.  This information can then be used for the partnerships National data.

For clubs that are willing to share in the 'club capture' form a further meeting will be arranged so that more formal links can be made between the local club and their target audience.  This could involve marketing and publicity in the partnership school (with the Heads agreement), advertising on this very website and even an opportunity to offer taster sessions in schools.

If you are interested in more information please call either Daniel or Rebecca on 01924 303 815

There’s a rumble in the city tonight

There’s a rumble in the city tonightBlood, Sweat and Tear 2 – The Friday Rumble opened its doors this afternoon at Wakefield City High School for this year full contact rugby league explosion. With seven teams entered this competition continues to grow but it is not for the faint hearted and this year provided it all. Teams from Sharlston, Heath View, Sandal Endowed, Lofthouse, Wrenthorpe and Shay Lane put their courage and bodies on the line to win that very impressive trophy. From the beginning there was plenty of metal on show has all the teams battled it out to find each others strengths, weakness and key players. Sandal 1, Lofthouse, Heath View and Sharlston all looked like early winners but nothing was final until the last game. With some wonderful passing, running, support play and tackling the referees teachers, parents, supports and coaches held their breath. With aching bodies, sore muscles and a collection of cuts and bruises the top two teams Sandal 1 and Lofthouse battled it out in a no holes barred grand final. In the end, despite some brilliant tackling the size and power of Sandal 1 (what do they feed them on?) won through and to loud applause they lifted the trophy to be crowned Blood, Swear and Tear Champions 2008. THE Top Link Conference

THE Top Link Conference

What an amazing day, not only for Outwood Grange College leaders but the schools that attended the event.

The OGC leaders day started early by putting out signage and setting up the registration desks.

A little less than the expected amount of schools turned up in the morning.  BUT, the OGC students were very organised in handing out welcome packs and T-shirts to arriving students.

The event was opened by James Wilkinson from the Youth Sport Trust and none other than Mrs Buckingham, Vice Principle of OGC.  The sporting champion that attended was Jenna Downing, an extreme rollerblader.  Several of our students interviewed Jenna, for that interview please visit the OGC home page within this site.  Jenna is the British Champion from 1998 to 2006, in 2005 was the UK Freesports Athlete of the Year Winner and came third in the LG Action Sports World Championships..to name but a few titles

After an inspirational DVD and speeches the teachers remained with James Wilkinson and Debbie Speed, whilst the students were taken to the sportshall.  For information about the rest of the event please visit the OGC site.

Needless to say, BIG THANKS to the leaders, Jenna, YST, Mrs Buckingham and Philippa Youlden (trainer of the leaders).

The photo attached shows James Wilkinson introducing the event and Kassie Roper about to divide the schools into groups.

Sports Jam Sports Leaders

Sports Jam Sports Leaders

This is a photo of the sports leaders by the end of the week!  Both Mr Rutter and Mrs Foster would like to commend all the sports leaders on being excellent leaders throughout the 4 day camp.

The sports leaders volunteered in their school holiday.  Their job was to register the students upon arrival, lead the children to their 'base room'. They then took them to every activity whilst helping them settle into the classes and helped them learn new skills.

Mrs Foster said 'After the 4 years I have been running this camp I have never known so many committed sports leaders.  They all got so involved with their groups and activities.  The young children really benefited from having such good role models'

Mr Rutter said of the Higher Sports Leaders 'Every time I have walked into one of their sessions the students have been fully engaged and focused on everyone being involved. I am very pleased with their efforts.'

Sports Jam Camp, Easter 2008

Sports Jam Camp, Easter 2008

What a wonderful 4 days we have had at the Sports Jam Camp.  The weather hasn't been great but it hasn't dampened our spirits.

The camp was full this holiday and saw 100 children play sports such as badminton, football, frisbee, sportshall athletics, kwik cricket, parachute games, dance, uni-hoc, short tennis, tag rugby, netball, basketball, the occasional 'sit-down', rounders and rock-it-ball.

The camp boasted a great deal of talent.  Aden (coach) said "all the groups have been really well behaved and I have seen a lot of talent".  Children walked from activities with smiles and red faces.  Many children met up with old friends and new friendships were also forged.

Please scroll down the website for more photos.  To enlarge the photo, simply click on it.

Mr Rutter and Mrs Foster would like to thank the coaches, Mick, Vicki, Aden, Hanni, Kassie, Jo, Claire, Jess, Steve and Elliot. The sports leaders have also been excellent, see their write up below!

Partnership Football Festivals

The Partnership Football 7-a-side competitions were keenly fought on the Astro-turf at Outwood Grange. The floodlights shone brightly on some exciting fixtures.

The Year 11 was a very close affair with Outwood Grange winners, Becketts 2nd and Ossett 3rd. All the teams finished on the same number of points but the Outwood Grange College superior goal difference gave them the title.

Year 10

Becketts fought off the challenge of all the other schools in the Partnership to secure their title. The eight teams played to an excellent standard in skill and perseverance.

Year 9

Kettlethorpe High School seized the initiative in securing the Year 9 Champions title. Several schools finished on equal number of points for the runners up position - Ossett, Freeston and Outwood.

Year 8

This competition was keenly fought by eight teams. Becketts clinched the title, with Outwood finishing a close 2nd, Horbury 3rd.

The Year 7 was won by Becketts with Freeston runners up - only a point separated them.

Congratulations must go to City High who supported all the Festivals as did Outwood Grange College.

A special mention to the staff who coached, refereed and supported these Festivals.

The standard of discipline and sportsmanship was an excellent standard and I would like to thank all the schools for supporting the first 7-A-side Astro-turf Festivals.

Congratulations and Celebrations to us!! edited

Congratulations and Celebrations to us!! edited61 of our partnership schools have achieved Activemark (for Primary schools) and Sportsmark (for Secondary schools). This is an amazing achievement. The criteria for the award was as follows. Activemark -% of pupils participating in at least 2 hours of high quality PE and school sport each week is significantly above the national average; and held a sports day and had met or bettered the national average for pupils involved in sports leadership OR the % of pupils participating in sports clubs linked to their school. Sportsmark - % of pupils participating in at least 2 hours of high quality PE and school sport each week is significantly above the national average; and the school held a sports day; and met or bettered the national average in three or more different questions. Due to the fact that our partnership have 90% participation rates the partnership has been awarded 'Partnership Mark', one of only 140 partnerships in the Country to achieve this. Well Done YOU!

Rock-It-Balling Around

Rock-It-Balling AroundMaking History
Tuesday evening saw five Year 11 teams Crofton, Outwood, Cathedral, Becket and Easingwold from York engage in England’s first ever Inter-School Rock-It-Ball Competition at Lightwaves Sports Centre.

Item Added on 06-02-2008 by Jill Atkins-Mackley

Althrough Rock-It-Ball is a relatively new sport to a number of these High Schools the pupils quickly picked up the idea and began to give Easingwold, who have their own independent team, a run for their money.
The idea of Rock-It-Ball is to hit your opponent with the ball, thrown from your rock-it. Once hit, the player must raise their hand and await the referee to release them back into the game. The referee then gives one point to the striking team. If a player does not acknowledge the hit then a three point penalty is given against them.

Item Added on 06-02-2008 by Jill Atkins-Mackley

The sport is physically demanding due to the fact that there are five balls in play at any time and if you stand still you get hit.
All the teams quickly got to grips with the game and demonstrate good teamwork transferring the ball. A number of player were identified by the England coach, who was present, and asked to attended a England team training camp on the 17th February.

It was a great evening of sport and highlighted to a number of players and teachers what a great inclusive sport Rock-It-Ball is with both girls and boys competing against one another. The quote of the evening came from a young man who said “Rock-It-Ball is brilliant, it’s better than football because everybody can be the striker.”

Tennis Course a Success!

Daniel wins set and match!

Daniel Fawkes, Community Sports Coach for Sport and Active Lifestyles to 20 of the partnerships teachers and/or volunteers through their paces at mini tennis.

Thanks to Shay Lane school for providing a venue the staff spent a morning learning basic skills and how to deliver to Key Stages 1 and 2.

The evaluations from the course were excellent. Letters will be circulated shortly to those attending schools to ask if they would like to join a tennis league. The league is hoped to start after Easter. If you didn't access the course but are interested in still joining the league please contact Rebecca Foster, PDM at Outwood Grange College. Please note the the tennis tournament for the 28th February has been cancelled.

Jayne Hopkinson led 24 Adult Support Leaders in a variety of lunchtime games for primary school children. The day course looked at ways in engaging all children through a range of differentiated games. Jayne also took the Leaders through conditioned games and practical advice at dealing with all playground situations.

The feedback from the course was also excellent. It is hoped that the partnership will support those attending staff in gaining more qualifications by linking with the opportunities Sport and Active Lifestyles Service have such as the Community Sports Leaders Award (now known as CL2)

New sport goes up like a Rock-It!

New sport goes up like a Rock-It!Rock-It-Ball gets its first outing in Wakefield
For those of you looking at the screen and thinking what on earth is Rock-It-Ball? Well the best way to describe it is a cross between lacrosse and dodge ball. The object of the game is to try and hit a member of the opposition with a ball. As you can imagine it captures a number of children and adults interest - the chance to throw ball at somebody else is one not to be missed!

HAPPY NEW 2008!

Welcome back and I hope you have had a wonderful holiday.

This term brings us fresh challenges and some exciting developments.

The Local Devlivery Agency has appointed a new Lead Trainer, called Steve Caldecott. He promisies to be an amazing asset to Wakefield and more importantly to the Continued Proferssional Development of teachers in and for PE.

We are also working closley with West Yorkshire Sport to appoint a Competition Manager, who will be based at Outwood and work across both partnerships. Their main role will be to provide a single pathway for sport within our area, but linking to national governing bodies too.

The new batch of Factory Eleven equipment has been handed out and used and staff training is underway with the training of primary tennis training and the launch of a new tennis league shortly.

The SSCos main body of work this term will center around the 5 hour offer that the DCSF have introduced.

Have a great term and I will keep you posted on future developments.

Factory Eleven Day

The schools who attended had a fantastic day. The day began with a cricket demonstration. The students and staff were seperated into groups to experiment with the equipment. All the children thought of some excellent ideas which impressed many of the teachers.

The next activity was tennis. with the impressive equipment all the children had a go on all the stations. Daniel Fowkes who is our Community Sports Coach for tennis came and had a go too.

After a wonderful lunch, the group went onto the golf experience. This was by far the most popular with the children. They were putting and chipping over ponds and trees, all in the shay Lane gym!

The day was a huge success and the equipment is being delivered to schools once they have signed their contract.

Thankyou to Factory Eleven and Amy Wright at Shay Lane.

Factory 11 have displayed their products at Wimbledon, the London Marathon and the Great North Run (amongst others).

PLT training 'a hoot'!

What an amazing two days we spent disseminating multi skills training to the PLTs and some KS1 staff. Bryan Brookes saw us 'hop-step-jumping-sussoneying' down the sports hall!

Overall the feedback from the training was excellent and people were able to see the clear link of why multi skills training is crucial for younger years.

The Community Sports Coaches were invaluable on the day, ensuring staff could relate the activities to their sports. The new scheme will begin after Christmas.

The unofficial PESSCL results were also shown by the PDM, however, until the 'official' results have been clarified by Government we won't shout about it yet!

Gifted and Talented Day, July

The week before the Secondary schools broke up, the partnership organised a Gifted and Talented day for our Year 7 and 8 pupils at all our attached Secondary schools.

Unfortunatley places were limited but we managed to cater for 100 athletes. The venue was Wakefield College and Mel Henshall and his team really made us all welcome. Wakefield College provided great resources and staff to deliver the workshops. these workshops are highlighted in our 'News' section.

Jonny McGovern was our guest of honour as arranged by Mr Hulme at Ossett Technology College. Jonny gave an amazing insight to the world of elite athletes in the 4.70 Dingy, double helm. Jonny is in the GB Worldclass system and it his hoped he will be a medal contender in Bejing next year at the Olympics.

All evaluations from the athletes were extremely positive and constructive comments will ensure that next time the sessions are longer and more practical.

Mr Hulme also led a teacher workshop on gifted and talented students and how schools can support them. It is hoped that we will continue this group to share good practice.

Mr Worrell from the Schoolls Improvement team also came down to observe the day. He was delighted to see so many athletes engaged in sport and meeting some of our Olympic representatives!

Due to this day being a success we intend to organise this event again later in the year.

Welcome Back

Welcome back to all our hardy website readers! I hope you have had a wonderful Summer and are now rarring to go!

The partnership embark on two PLT development days on the 20th and 27th of September. Our 'unofficial' PESSCL results will be announced and the sharing of action plans and designated partnership support.

An exciting and new aspect of the training has a practical element this year. We welcome Bryan Brookes who is an excellent Sports UK tutor for multi skills as well as being a Competition Manager in Bradford.

The reason I have invited Bryan across to deliver multi skills to you is because multi skills is a crucial tool for all teachers to have in order to help their students on the first building block of fundamental movement for all sports skills.

Bryan will be joined by a number of our Community Sports Coaches who will help support the activities and network with staff.

Again, the reason for such an adventurous task this year was to surprise you with the re-structure of the Community Sports Coach (CSC) programme. As Sport and Active Lifestyles and the Sports Partnership feel, multi skills is the way to go for our children. This new aspect will begin after Christmas.

If PLT/KS1 staff are inducted on our training day, then, if required, the CSC could come into your school and deliver a six week multi skills scheme to your children based around their speciality, I am positive you will see quicker development in your students for their basic sports skills.

Exciting times.

Please note that due to gathering all the CSC together the order of day has changed. The practical session will begin at 10 until 12 as opposed the the afternoon.

Also note that all staff who have applied for Wake Up, Shake Up are invited to bring a student with them. The student can then help support the role out of the routine.

Val Sabin GYMNASTICS venue has changed from Denhale ARC to Heathview School.

Watch out for forthcoming courses: Observing Children Moving, Football for KS1 & 2 and an exciting day of activity for 2 children from all schools with the PLT to try out some fantastic new equipment from Factory Eleven.

Please be aware that the Home Events Calendar has been updated recently due to some wrong information being placed upon it. Apologies.

Minilympic Day a wash out

Well, I can only just bring myself to write about it now, but it was very disappointing to have to cancel our annual Minilympic Day.

I investigated the Park on the Tuesday and there were ducks swimming on the lower part of Thornes Park! The road the other side of the park was completely flooded, poor residents. The train track and play park were under water too.

The ground was so wet under foot, I was sure it would not dry out in time, I had to make the very hard decision. However, only 2 hours later the Council phoned me up and informed me that they were not allowing me to use the Park anyway.

For the first year we had attracted a big sponsor with the banking firm 'First Direct'. They had kindly provided the leaders T-shirts and goody bags for participants. First Direct had even organised a promotional double decker bus to be on site at Thornes too.

Due to the time it takes to organise the transport and book facilities it is unlikely the Minilympic Day will take place at Thornes Park. I have left it open for the SSCos to see if they can use the secondary schools site to perhaps run a similar event with their cluster, but many SSCos have already got events on their designated SSCo days. Other SSCos are considering doing the event with the Year 6 who will be Year 7 in September.

No matter what we will try to accommodate the students as much of your time and theirs have gone into making the day possible.

Better weather next year.

My best wishes go out to all those people who may have been flooded out of their homes/schools/cars too.

Summer Top Ups being planned

Summer Top Up swimming at Thornes

Letters are currently being sent to schools and direct to parents (who have applied previously) for Year 6 Top Up swimming lessons.

It is a National guideline that all Year 6 pupils should be able to swim at least 25m by the time they leave primary school. Sometimes, this is not always the case. The Government has provided all Sports Partnerships with a grant to organise free Top-Up swimming for those targeted pupils.

The Outwood Grange College Sports Partnership has secured two weeks at Thornes Park pool over the Summer to offer this free provision. Students will be expected to attend a week of lessons spanning over half an hour to develop their techniques. Parents will be expected to transport their child to and from the venue.

If you would like to apply for a free place (remember your child must be in Year 6 and unable to swim at least 25m) please contact Rebecca Foster; rjfoster01@yahoo.co.uk

Could YOU be the next Young Ambassador?

After a very successful first year of our Young Ambassadors programme I am delighted to inform you that there is a chance to train up two more!

If you would like to apply to become a Young Ambassador this is what you will have to do;
1. Be aged between 14-18
2. Go to a school within this partnership
3. To want to become a Champion for sport by promoting the Olympic and Paralympic movement across the local community
5. To be a role model for other young people
6. To aspire to inspire participation in sport for all children

If selected you will attend a National training day where the Youth Sport Trust will skill you up in delivering presentations, being a fantastic role model and help you shape your plans for being a Young Ambassador. You must then spend some of your time doing outreach work within your school, club or sports partnership. You can chose exactly what you want to do as long as you focus on the promotion of sport.

You will get some great resources to help you do this role, such as a T-shirt, business cards, memory stick and other items. Plus, bags of experience and an opportunity to access areas that may not be open to you if you don't apply! If you plan to go to Uni or employment, being a Young Ambassador will certainly look impressive on your application form.

If you are keen to be selected send a short paragraph as to what skills you could bring to this role to rjfoster01@yahoo.co.uk
Closing Date:11th June. Decision will be made on 12th June

GOOD LUCK!

The Partnership Support Brennan

The Outwood Grange College and Sports Partnership have joined with Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and West Yorkshire Police to raise funds for Brennan Rooney.

Brennan Rooney is the son of Trinity star Jamie Rooney. Brennan suffers from Cerebral Palsy and the funds are hoped to send him to Poland for treatment (if enough can be raised).

PC Amos approached Outwood Grange College to ask if we could help sponsor the T-shirt which will be on sale in order to raise funds for Brennan.

The shirts feature the police and Wildcats logo as well as other sponsors.

PC Amos will be coming into school assemblies soon to promote the T-shirts and all children and staff can support Brennan by buying a T-shirt. The charge is only £5 for children and £7 for adults. A bargin! Orders for the T-shirts will be organised over school break times.

PC Amos also stated that 'On Sunday 13th May, the shirts will be sold at the Wildcats' ground by local school children, before the Challenge Cup game against Bradford Bulls.' 'On Sunday 1st July everyone who has bought a shirt and wears it at the home game against Wigan will get a raffle ticket and be entered into a proze draw at half time'

PC Amos also requires 5 students from Outwood Grange College to sell the T-shirts at the game on the 13th. You must be in Year 11 and have parental consent to help. If you are interested please see Mrs Milner.

We hope, together, to support Brennan Rooney in his quest to get further treatment.

What a busy term

Now that Easter is almost upon us I thought that it would be good to refelect over the last half term.

I think we are so often always looking forward that we forget to see just what we have achieved. So, with this little overview I hope that if there is any doubt as to what we are doing...this will clear it up, and I suppose this is only the stuff that I know about!

The February TOP UP swimming went off well. We managed to get at least half the attendees to swim 25m which is excellent progress. Thank you to Jo Collins and all the swimming staff that committed their time to this project.

The first joint INSET day was organised between Ossett, Horbury and Outwood. The PE departments were able to get together and really discuss good practice.

The Young Sports Ambassadors have ventured into Kirkhamgate and surveyed the children as to what sports links they would like to see. The Ambassadors will be producing a display for the children to look at that will inform them of the links.

4 students from nearly all of our partnership secondaries sent Yr10 students to LMU to attend a day on learning how to organise a sports festival. We are all hoping to capitalise on this new found wisdom to set up some more festivals!

Strategic meetings have taken place with Lisa Dodd who is the new Service Director for Sport in Wakefield. A new working party will complement the Community Sports Network which will hope to create a strong sporting infra-structure in Wakefield.

The Foundation and Key Stage 1 Participation Awards are coming to a close...we do try and tire the children out before they go on Easter break!

The SSCos have been busy in their own clusters, as well as re-vamping Minilympic Day. We have revised all the activities in order to challenge all our Yr 6 competitiors. The resource cards will be out after Easter, so the training can begin!

The partnership have also sent out documentation to help you gather the info you need for the National Survey, (those 10 questions!)

Below is an overview of how we did last academic year as a partnership. They are all averages.
1. What is the total curriculum time in minutes that all pupils in each year group spend taking part in PE in a typical week?
National Result: 111mins Our Result: 105mins

2. What is the total number of pupils in each year group who particiapte in at least two hours of high quality PE and out of school hours school sport in a typical week?
National Result: 80% Our Result: 83%

3. What is the total number of pupils in each year group involved in intra school competitive activities during this academic year?
National Result: 71% Our Result: 81%

4. Did you hold at least one sports day or equivalent event during this academic year?
National Result: 97% Our Result: 96%

5. What is the total number of pupils in each year group who have taken part in inter school competition during this academic year?
National Result: 37% Our result: 47%

6. How many of the following sports or activities has your school provided this academic year?
National Result: 15 Our Result: 16

7. How many sports or activities do you have links to clubs?
National Result: 6 Our Result: 9

8.What is the total number of pupils in each year group who have participated in one or more community sports, dance or multi skill clubs with links to the school during this academic year?
National Result: 27% Our Result: 36%

9. What is the total number of pupils in each year group currently registed as gifted and talented beacuse of their ability in PE and/or school sport?
National Result: 6% Our Result: 5%

10. What is the total number of pupils in each year group actively involved in sports volunteering and leadership this academic year?
National Result: 8% Our Result: 13%

We are all very pleased with these results and are aiming to increase them this year.

So, in a nutshell, thats it for now, but further information will be placed on the site after Easter. To check out more action which is more cluster based, please go to that site.

Participation awards A -Go-Go!

The partnership has been successful in gaining funding for the Participation Awards. 9 schools applyed for the new format of awards and letters will be sent shortly to them inviting them on an induction afternoon. (You can sign up online!!)

The purpose of this award is to increase current levels of participation by rewarding children's commitment to being active. It encourages children to keep a record of their physical activity by colouring in a diary which has smiley faces in.

Bronze = minimum of 210 minutes a week
Silver = minimum of 315 minutes a week
Gold = minimum of 420 minutes a week

Physical activity may include physical development within the school curriculum or an after school club. It also includes walking to school, active play with friends and participation in sports clubs.

The activity needs to be of moderate intensity in order to be recorded. This means any exercise that makes a child feel warm and breathe slightly harder than normal. Children should still be able to hold a conversation when exercising at this level.

It is a six week block of recording, diaries can be taken home if the school chooses or can remain a school based recording system.

By including their parents with the recording may signpost many children to local sports clubs and activities. Weekend activities can be included and parents may become more aware as to how frequent their child may get slightly out of breath through particiapting in this award.

Certificates and stickers are awarded at the end of the programme and it is hoped that parents will have access to multi skill training so they can continue this positive step after the award finishes.

Sports Hall Athletics Leaders Course

On the 10th October 2006, 20 Btech, CSLA and HSLA students from Outwood Grange College were trained up in delivering sports hall athletics.

The tutor demonstrated relays, javelin, chest push and seated push. The group was then split into small groups where they each led a new sports hall activity such as target throw, standing long jump, 5 strides, speed bounce, high stepper and balancing.

Many of the students have now commited to helping out teachers in the primary school start up clubs and cluster sports hall festivals. After Christmas a sports hall athletics Community Club will begin at Outwood Grange College on Wednesday evenings. We are encouraging deaf/hard of hearing pupils to attend and hearing children as part of a Lottery Grant.

It is planned that the same opportunity of tutor training will be available for each partnership secondary school and also staff training for SSCo's and volunteers from their PE departments.

If you are interested in coming along to the Wedmesday club please contact or text Rebecca Foster on 07984074273.

PLT Planning Day Report

Celebration of 83%

Two PLT Planning Days were held. It is always a shame to split the partnership but there are over 70 attendees. However, the days were well attended and much work was discussed, shared and planned for.

Our PSA result was 60% last year which was a 5% improvement on the year before. This year, Rebecca took much delight in announcing 83%. Excellent.

59 schools achieved the 100% participation of high quality PE/Sport, 3 schools were just below 75% and only 7 schools below 58%. What an amazing turn around!

Our annual review and data collection showed us where we made up the time... Fitbods is by far our strength, without the support and hard work invested by Wrenthorpes' Sally Mayman, where would we be? Fitbods continues to push up activity time over our lunchtimes, 3/4 of the partnership have got this scheme off the ground, so WELL DONE and thanks to you for taking it back to your school and implementing it!

The additional work with 'Wake Up Shake Up' has also been a huge bonus, even some PLTs are totally getting down with their funky bad selfs and requesting more routines...bring it on!

58 festivals were organised by the partnership, allowing over 780 children to enjoy! Olympic Day (now known as Minilympic Day) rose its roof to house over 1850 pupils. Top Up swimming saw 42% of our targetted Year 6 non swimmers achieve their 25m, despite Sun Lane Pool having to close. 862 sports leaders have been identified through Fitbods and Wake Up Shake Up. Jayne Hopkinson has also introduced over 662 children to new sports clubs in her role. Amazing stuff.

Where next? Focused work schools currently not achieving 75%, to maintain Fitbods and support Wake Up Shake Up, to fine tune Big Lottery Fund spends as for many schools this will be their last year. The partnership, in discussions with the Wakefield Sport and Recreation Division have selected target sports for us all to concentrate on: sports hall athletics, gym, swimming, rugby, basketball and netball.

After Rebecca presented her results from the National survey, the clusters broke into groups to have their own meetings.

The days were extremely useful and evidence of what happened last year and projections for this year were gathered.

Planning for Next Year!

If you are wanting to be one step ahead, please look in the NEWS section under 'Opportunities for Next Year'. There is a list of schemes we intend to run and criteria required if you want to be involved. It includes items such as Val Sabin workshops, Gifted and Talent Identification, Measuring High Quality PE, support for Fitbods and Wake Up Shake Up, SAQ training (Speed, Agility, Quickness), working group to develop 'Partnership Participation Awards' and a pilot scheme to develop tracking skills for dyspraxic children at KS1. Hopefully there is something for everyone and you all have the chance to be involved in something!

All you have to do is let me know via email, phone or letter if you want to be involved!

Opportunities for Next Year

Something for everyone!

Please look at the menu below to see if any of the future links suit your needs within your PE Development plan.

1. Val Sabin Workshop : Training will commence in September/October 2005. Ideally suited for class teachers who want to teach alongside the scheme. Candidates have already registered an interest and will be notified in due course. It will require a full day for each module (gym, dance, games).

2. Need help with Fitbods? A support group to display good practice in other schools. Troubleshooting it onto your playground! An ideal forum to consider next steps and development of our Fitbods scheme. (Fitbods is a scheme devised by Salford and Trafford Healthy Schools team).

3. Dyspraxic Pilot. Ideally we would like a school from each cluster to volunteer. We would like to aim this workshop at KS1. A meeting will be required to transfer information to you fully. The meeting will be aimed at PLTs, OT's, AOTTs, TA's, anyone else who shows an interest! The general idea is identify, at most, a group of 10 children with traits of dyspraxia (we have a pre-course identification to help staff with this). Provide a 6-9 week breakfast/breaktime or after school club thats lasts only 20mins based on simple exercises (this should be led by the interested staff, ideas and lesson plans have already been written so little planning will be required). The results shown from another partnership who have run this idea (St John Fisher) have been amazing. Worth coming to a meeting to see what they achieved at least! The children benefited by gaining self esteem, more focused within lessons, happier and staff and parenst saw an imporvement in fine motor skills.

4. Do you have High Quality PE in your school? If you have 2 hours on your curriculum we would like to challenge your thought processes by providing a brief presentation to your staff followed by a questionnaire. The questionnaire is based on the 10 high quality outcomes and it is based on your own perceptions of them, you don't have to put your name on it, just the age group you teach. The questionnaires are taken away by the partnership and correlated and reported back to your Head teacher. Ofsted LOVE this process as it shows qualititive evidence. Suggestions of how to improve (where necessary) are given and support from the partnership can be given. Continued Professional Development can work extremely well alongside this process as results may show a pattern that requires whole school development in one area, and again, the partnership and LEA may be able to help with this.

5. Speed, Agility and Quickness (SAQ) training. Check out their website www.saq.co.uk This practical workshop can help towards all key stages with activities progressing from easy to more skillful. Equipment may be required to support the teaching of this but ultimately the course is well worth experiencing as adaptations can be made. The SAQ training will improve basic movement skills and has been recognised worldwide as a great teaching and training tool. Everyone welcome, half day commitment.

6. Gifted and Talented scheme. Names are being delivered to me and sketchy plans have been pulled together by myself. Is there anyone else who may want an input to G&T from KS1 all the way through to Y7 and hopefully beyond?

7. Would like to start a Partnership Participation Award working group? Those who followed the YST scheme loved the idea but hated the paperwork! Several have said to me that they would be interested in putting a partnership one together. If you are interested, let me know!

8. Leadership working group. From Fitbod to volunteering at the 2012 games. What we can do to ensure our children are represented.

9. How do I sustain my after school club once the Big Lottery Fund money has finished? Worried, give me a call.

Do you have any ideas that you want to develop through the partnership? If yes then drop me a line. Thanks!

Cool at Sport workshop

The selection for LMU talent camp

On Wednesday 26th April 2006, 36 Year 6 pupils attended the 'Cool at Sport' camp at Outwood Grange College.

The students had been selected by their school to trial for the 4 day residentail camp at Leeds Metropolitan University. Sadly, only 4 students would be lucky!

The students were split into 4 different groups and purposefully not placed with any friends from their school (this was to see how well the pupils would interact with each other for the first time).

Each group rotated round 4 activities, which were; 1. Speed, Agility and Quickness training. This looked at the basic co-ordination, timing and reactions of the athletes. 2. Problem Solving. This was to see how well the pupils worked in a group and how they spoke to each other. 3. Streetdance. Pupils were given a crash course in some hip hop moves and then asked to develop their ideas. 4. Rock-it-ball. This is a new sport that we asked the pupils to try. Its a fast paced game with flying missiles!

All the staff were impressed with the high standard of all the candidates. It gave the teachers much hope for 2012 Olympics!

The 4 lucky students were, Bethany Shearon (Sandal Endowed), Alisha Sesrum (St Austins), Maria Boldison (St Austins) and Jasmine Leigh Porter (Walton Juniors).

The 4 reserves were, Jordan Harper (Sandal Endowed), Bethany Jayne Porter (Walton Juniors), Adam Oesterlein (Kirkhamgate) and Lauren Cooper (Walton Juniors).

Every candidate received a certificate and a 'Cool at Sport' t-shirt.

If you would like to know more about the camp at LMU please go to the website, www.talentmatters.org

First Off The Mark with Rugby

Community Sports Leader Training

On 5th April 2006 we saw the true meaning of the opportunities that the Outwood Grange Sports Partnership can bring.

20 selected Year 11, 12 and 13 students came to Outwood to achieve their Community Sports Leaders Award in Rugby. Those represented schools were Outwood, Kettlethopre, Ossett and Horbury.

The pupils spent the morning introducing themselves and learning about communication, organising skills etc. The course was a cross between theory and practical aspects and the studnets had to lead warm ups, skills and referee.

An excellent day and thanks to the RFU tutors, Alec Porter, Stuart Dixon and Andy Fuller

It is hoped that more chances for students to get skilled up in other sports areas will happen in the Summer term.

Communication Through Sport

A Sporting Chance for All

On the 29th March, the partnership and five Higher Sports Leaders organised a 'Communication Through Sport' day.

It was decided through links with Colin MacDonald (Federation for Disabled Sports) and Penny McDonald (Head teacher at Heathview Sensory Unit) that the Outwood Grange College students could run an event through their course work.

It was decided that all deaf children based in mainstream and support units could attend a day of sport. The children could also bring along a friend or sibling.

The four sports that were on offer were Athletics (coached by Danny Milnes, Community Sports Coach), Football (Ken McRitchie and his squad), Tag Rugby (Stuart Dixon, Community Sports Coach) and Cricket (Shaun Cockhill, player and at coach at Pledwick).

Children were received by Community Sports Leaders, organised by the Higher Sports Leaders. Each child got a badge so they knew what team they were in and a name tag.

The event was opened and kindly sponsored by the Mayor and Mayoress of Wakefield.

The Community Sports Leaders then led a 15minute warm up. The Sports Leaders then took the children to their activities. Each activity lasted 45minutes.

Over lunch, face painting and hand drawings were on offer. We also had Lauren Peffers (Gold and Silver Medalist at the Deaflympic Games for 800m and 1500m, Euopean X-Country Champion) and Bobby Singh (Gold Medalist at the Deaflympic Games for football).

The Mayor and Mayoress closed the event by handing out medals and certificates to every participant. They also handed out goody bags kindly donated by uk:athletics. Many children posed for photos with Lauren and Bobby.

The Higher Sports Leaders then presented the Mayor with a commemrative polo shirt.

A quick partnership update!

I do feel that this is long over due and I do apologise. However, plenty of headway has been made over the last two months as to intergrating our new schools into the established partnership.

Most importanly our Partnership Development Plan (PDP) and our Big Lottery Fund bids have been approved! That means more out of hours sports activities for all our new schools beginning in September 2006.

A copy of the new PDP will be placed on the website, and it is focused around the Public Sector Agreement of gaining 2 hours high quality PE on and off the curriculum. We are currrrently gaining timetable models from schools that offer 2 hours.

The partnership has run several teacher training courses, please refer to the reports in the News Items under 'Elevating Athletics' and 'Long Term Athlete Development/Fundamental Training'.

The roll out of the Community Sports Coaches remains successful and many of our partnership schools are sending the 'level of interest forms' back to Jo Collins at Sun Lane Baths. The forms are sent out a few weeks before the next term so you can 'dib' your coach!

The 'new' Primary Link Teachers had an excellent Module B as part of their training in March. The tutor was Sam Gorman who gave an excellent and thorough account of how to plan and influence change in bite size chunks. The next Module is 23rd May 2006. Sam also advertised an outstanding Scheme of Work which included the foundation stage. If you would be interested in looking at this please contact me at OGC.

Data Collection for the National Survey will be upon us soon, so please keep your pigeon holes at the ready for instructions!

The National Top Up swimming lessons are also well on track. A second letter has gone out to all primary schools asking for confirmation of childrens names and what time the school swim at. A return slip is required. These names will form the register so the coach can target the children as soon as they come to the pool.

We have also had many takers for the Gifted and Talented Leeds Met trial. Please see news items for further information.

Sports Jam Camp is being housed this Easter at Horbury School, due to the building work at Outwood. Steve Biltcliffe will be managing the camp, if you would like to have an application form. please contact me at OGC. I hope to get an application form on line by Summer.

Please have a look at other news items for more in-depth reports and I will endeavour to update the website more regualrly for the dedicated reader!

Elevating Athletics

A new, modern way to teach athletics

The partnership (organised) and West Yorkshire Sport (funded) an excellent 'Elevating Athletics' course on 27th February 2006.

We had a number of primary and secondary staff attend the primary element of the course. The tutor was Mary Smith and the session lasted 3 hours.

As an attendee I felt that the course and resource was long over due. By attending the course not only did we get up-to-date practical teaching ideas but an amazing teacher delivery file, which includes:
A DVD which shows practical PE demos, ideal for watching yourself for ideas but also the students can watch. It has both primary and secondary progressions on.
Contains teacher cards for EVERY athletic event, in a colourful, practical and informative fashion.
Has student activity cards and homework cards that can be photocopied.
Posters! with x-curricular ideas on the back for both pri and sec.
A thorough section on inclusion and health and safety.
Lesson Plans.
Support with how to run compettions.
Progressive activities, warm ups, mobility exercises and much, much more!

Anyone would think I am on commission. However, I totally bought into the new wave of applying athletics in schools so much so I have become a National trainer for it! And I intend to run courses within the partnership myself so I am hoping everyone will have a chance to access this great new resource.

So, watch your pigeon holes!

Long Term Athlete Development / Fundamentals

How to improve the basics!

The partnership (orgainsed) and Sports Coach UK (funded) this amazing course on 9th March 2006.

I guess it was the sort of workshop that you know should exsist but never knew how to get on it! It was a full day of both theory and practical as to how and why British Sport is in the state that it is in!

Dave Harrison, the tutor, spent the morning identifying the importance of coaches and how we as teachers and parents must point our children in the right direction to gain such opportunities. Scientifc research and reports were also reflected upon.

He identifyed the current buzz word: 'Physical Literacy' and again, that teachers and parents are obliged to allow our childen to experience running, jumping, throwing, catching, gliding, kicking a moving object, being able to swim etc and that these Fundamental skills are the building blocks to becoming 'physically literate' but infact having the best chance possible to become an able sports person in any sport.

The afternoon saw us practically understanding the importance of Agility, Balance and Co-ordination (ABC). Without those 3 attributes children cannot possibley be able to develop physical literacy, so it is crucial that we include simple exercises into our PE lessons so that children can develop their ABC. Confidence in these key areas will entice more of our children to have a go, rather than opting out because they may feel silly and incapable.

An excellent, refreshing course.

2012 Invitation

Rebecca off to London

I was delighted to be invited to attend a Volunteering Strategy Group responsible for 'Engaging Young People in Volunteering' in preperation for the London 2012 games.

The organisng body (LOCOG, London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games) has selected numerous folks from all over the Country to offer their advice and experience to support the following task:

'The group will inspire the creation of high quality volunteering opportunities of all young people, enabling them to be fully prepared to make a major contribution to the London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in 2012, and will leave a legacy we will all be proud of.'

I have attended 3 meeting so far, based at the LOCOG offices in Canary Wharf. Tasks have been divided up and I became a member of a sub group who were defining the role of a volunteer and suggesting a minimum/maximum age.

Much work has already been created and distilling the information down to present to the LOCOG panel will be the job of the chair.

The task of this group is to create a strategy within 6 months. From then the group will dispearse and re-group with new objectives and perhaps new people around the table!

A great opportunity.

Gifted and Talented Workshop

Trials at Outwood

On 26th April 2006 in Outwood Grange College Sports Hall we will be holding the first ever 'Gifted and Talented' trials.

This event came about from a presentation made by Dave Morley at Leeds Metropolitan University in November 2005. Last year, he organsied a 4 day residential camp for Year 6 pupils from across Yorkshire. The pupils had been selected through schools and sports partnerships.

It was up to the schools and sports partnerships as to how to select 4 children from their area. The children not only had to display an all round ability in many sports but also leadership skills, ability to pick up new skills, able to articulate tactics and coaching points to others etc.

The Outwood Grange College Partnership thought that this would be an ideal opportunity for children in their partnership.

It was decided that a standard letter would be sent to every primary school in the partnership. The letter asked the staff to identify 4 children in their school that could a) swim and b) showed an all round ability in most sports. There was a further list of criteria that the staff had to identify that the child had at least 5 qualities out of the 10 listed.

The staff, then passed the letters onto parents. It is the parents decision to allow their child to attend the trial at Outwood. We have only 4 places for 40 hopefull children who have currently enrolled onto the trials.

We hope to make all the children feel that they have already achieved great recognition by being selected for the night at Outwood. The children will be received by members of staff and put into groups. Throughout the session the children will be given at least 4 tasks to work on in groups.

1. Group warm up, so we can assess their basic agility, balance and co-ordination.
2. Problem Solving, how well they work with others.
3. Game situation. We will teach the children a new game and see how they apply themselves.
4. Co-ordination, Expressive Aspect, which will be based around movement to music.

We have chosen these simple tests as they will link into the activities based at Leeds Metropolitan University. We decided on teaching the children a new game (aspect 3) as we did not want to favour any sport i.e; football game, netball game.

The childern will know who is selected on the night.

Their names will be put forward by the partnership and all new correspondance will be made with Leeds Met direct.

If you have any further questions, please contact Rebecca at Outwood Grange College.

Happy New Year

I hope that all readers had a great Christmas and wish them a Happy New Year.

Thinking back to this time last year, for me, I was still in Sunny Australia at the Deaflympics. It seems like more than a year ago!

However, developments over Christmas have kept me busy and I am delighted to tell you that after all the PLT and SSCos hard work I managed to submit the final draft of the Partnership Development Plan and the new expansion school submission for Big Lottery Funding. Copies of these will be circulated to all Headteachers on approval from DfES and DCMS.

News for the New Year see the 'Participation Awards' being piloted, another Fitbod training session (the last of it's kind!!), a revised regime for the operations of Community Sports Coaches, networks with Magical Markings and a new funding 'stream' for swimmers at primary schools unable to achieve the 25m requirement (no pun intended!) and that's all for January!

We also welcome a work experience student from LMU, Adam Chapman who will be working within the partnership.

In the meantime...roll on Feb half term!!

club links

School to club link weeks

A school to club link week is when all the pupils from all the schools in a cluster are invited to try out a sports club for the first time, under the supervision of the School to Club Sports Consultant. A club link week follows a five week period of work where the Sports Consultant teaches some of the PE lessons in each school. This work has already been completed in the following clusters: Outwood, Kettlethorpe, Ossett, Horbury, Cathedarl and Highfield. Over 1,000 pupils have attended a new club via these weeks from 42 primary schools. A similar week will be coming soon to the Crofton, City High and St Thomas A Becket clusters.

The aim is to encourage more children to take up a sport in their own time to promote physical activity in the evenings and at weekends. It is hoped to make the pupils more aware of the importance of health and fitness and the role of physical activity.

In each area of the partnership, pupils have been offered access to up to 19 sports/physical activities and clubs have been found within walking distance of homes and schools. The provision is all in existing clubs which take place on a weekly basis.

The cost of the clubs varies from 50p to £2.50 with many offering free trial sessions. Pupils need only their usual PE kit and no specialist items are required. The activities cater for children aged 4-11 years.

A wide variety is on offer to include canoeing, gymnastics, athletics, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rugby, street dance, taekwondo, tap/ballet dance, swimming, badminton, trampolining, tennis, cheerleading, theatre dance, karate, majorettes.

Any children still wanting to try an activity are most welcome! Parents should contact me at Outwood Grange College for more details.

SAVE GOALS SAVE LIVES

Schools can save lives just by applying for a grant to replace unsafe goalposts and crossbars.

An article in the October edition of 'SCHOOL SPORT' highlights our responsibility to safeguard our youngsters and check out our goal posts and crossbars. It states," Since 1991, nine young footballers have tragically been killed by unsafe goals while many more have been seriously injured by others that fail to meet even basic safety standards".
Schools and clubs can apply for a grant to cover 50% of funding up to £1500 via the web sites
www.footballfoundation.org.uk or
www.thefa.com/grassroots/facilitydevelopment/goalpostsaftey/
The article points out that unsafe goals include goals built before 1996, home made goals, wooden goals, goals with metal cup hooks, rusted goals or goals with rusted bolts.
MAKE SURE YOUR GOALPOSTS ARE SAFE.

'Enhance the take up of sporting opportunities by 5-16 year olds by increasing the percentage of school children who spend a minimum of two hours each week on high quality PE and school sport, within and beyond the curriculum, from 25% in 2002 to 75% by 2006 and to 85% by 2008, and to at least 75% in each School Sports Partnership by 2008'

Invoice Procedure

Invoice Procedure

You have 12 days to use over 1 year, 2 days are funded by your school.

How to claim a release day:
1. Inform your SSCo that you wish to take a release day (make sure it is relevant to yuor Action Plan and that you are prepared to 'follow up' on the day).
2. Your SSCo will make a note of your request (it may be a good idea for you to note this on the 12 day planner provided for you on induction/planning day). Your SSCo will then contact the PDM (Rebecca) with your request.
3. The PDM will send you an invoice/s which your Head teacher must sign.
4. You or your Head returns the invoice to the PDM, where it will be processed and paid into the desiganted bank account (which your Head will specify).

Please note:
1. Always inform your SSCo of the relaese days taht you intend to take. If you do not recieve an invoice it means the PDM does not know you are using a release day and you will not be reimbursed for this.
2. Please complete the 12 day planning sheet, so it is evidenced how you have used your release day effectively. This can be shown to your Head, Ofsted inspectors and helps the PDM clarify how you are using the days to support PE and Sport in your school

School to Club Link-LINKING!

A massive CONGRATULATIONS has to go out to Jayne Hopkinson, our School to Club Sports Consultant.
Not only has Jayne worked in nearly all of our partner primary schools but she has now linked over 500 children into local sports clubs.
Her reasearch has shown that many of the children have returned to the clubs regularly. This is excellent news and shows that all her hard work has been recognised and rewarded.

Not content with supporting the primary school pupils, Jayne has also organsied the Fitbod training days (with the help of some very important Primary Link Teachers, Sally Porter, Rachel Eyre and David Harvey). The days were a great success. Jayne is currently circulating a questionnaire to see how the school has implemented the Fitbod scheme.

Jayne was also busy in the Easter holidays where she had organised FREE swimming lessons to all pupils in our partnership who are unable to swim 25m at Year 6. The turnout over the two weeks was better than last year and a number of children achieved their 25m, some even 50m! The scheme was kindly sponsored by Yorkshire Water.

Netherton revive the Family Festival of Sport

This previously very successful event, The Family Festival of Sport, was revived and hosted by Netherton School.

Our junior school staff, pupils, parents, high school staff and pupil sports leaders, all joined together for a very enjoyable evening of sport this July.
Liz Bradley and Wendy Mason organised a varied programme of athletic events which gave large numbers of pupils the opportunity to participate actively for their school.
St Peter's were the school team champions, but every pupil who took part deserves congratulating for their effort and sporting attitude shown in their performances.
Liz Bradley, in her closing speech, echoed how everyone involved had contributed to such an enjoyable evening. Pupils had the opportunity to meet and make new friends and this was particularly important for year 6 pupils who would soon be mixing together in our High School.
It is hoped the event will now continue each year and a date has already been set for July 2005.

Rebecca has been coaching deaf athletes on sporting weekends around the country for three years and was chosen as coach because she is used to working with deaf athletes and is one of the few coaches in the country who can do sign language.
Rebecca has to find her own funding for the trip and has been busy writing to local companies for sponsorship. Anyone interested in helping should contact Outwood Grange College on 01924 303815.

The BIG Lottery Fund

The Big Lottery Fund starts in our partnership

We are about to start the roll out of our Big Lottery Fund (previously known as the New Opportunities Fund). Letters have been sent to Heads to inform them of the 'claims' process for resources. All the SSCos are aware of your budget limitations, so, if you are ever unsure, please consult with them.
Please also be sure to keep a register of your new club. We have certain criteria we must successfully reach in order to tap into continued funding. Therefore, staff must encourage the identified 'target group', keep evidence, such as photos, reports of pupils' successes.
There will be so much more sports opportunities for our pupils in our partnership, let's ensure we celebrate it!
