Benchball Bonanza
The Benchball began in great fashion all set-ups and structured by Outwood Academy sport leaders. Each school was assigned a sports leader who coached them throughout providing their tactical expertise. Two leagues were created for the cluster of primary schools from Outwood with Lofhouse Gate entering a team in both. Ledger Lane opened the tournament up together with Kirkhamgate and within these first few games they began at a frantic pace with some last ditch snatches to deny the opening points of the event. Into the semi-finals the top two teams from each league competed for the coveted prize of a place in the final. Lofhouse Gate competed against Rooks Nest and the game remained pointless so a tense shoot-out secured a 3-1 win. The other semi final also went through a stressful shoot-out and this enabled an intra-school showdown between the Lofhouse teams as all the other schools still cheered on and counted down the times as it was battled out in a good natured style. Well done to all the schools who competed and Lofhouse will be seen in the Partnership Final soon…

Back with a bang...
Welcome back to everyone in the Outwood Grange Cluster. I hope all have had a great first month settling back into the school environment. With the entire cluster calendar events allotted a place in the diary lets now get as many children as we can playing sports they love and learning new skills and techniques whilst enjoying the experience. I will be in around your schools again this side of Christmas as I juggle the SSCO role with University and will still be based at newly named Outwood Grange Academy.

Match of the Day
A great big kick about began and the new Wayne Rooney and Fernando Torres wannabes showing off their skills in the year 3 football tournament. Sportleaders from Outwood Grange Academy assigned a league format with each school competing against each other with St Johns scoring four goals and going through to the final against Stanley St Peters who narrowly beat Lofthouse 1-0 in the other game. It was though the prolific goal scorers St Johns who with a penalty shoot-out looming took a 2-0 lead in the last few minutes and held on to be crowned champions!......

Football Focus
The focus on the year 4 mixed football tournament was on the great tackling, teamwork and communication that kept chances to a minimum the defences all three schools worked extremely hard to limit the attackers from shooting at goal. Lofthouse were the first team to claim their position inn the final with a 2-0 win over St Johns and a 0-0 with Stanley. In a tight tense affair between St Johns and Stanley in the league it was the early goal that settled a 1-0 victory for Stanley setting up a meeting again with Lofthouse. The final was again a great game with the tackling demonstrating fantastic desire to keep the forwards at bay but as with the Year 3 final going into the final couple of minutes the deadlock was broken this time by Lofhouse who were crowned the cluster champions with the narrow victory of 1-0!......

Rock-iting up a storm in Outwood
Following a four week training programme Year 6s from three schools in the Outwood Cluster, St. Johns, Wrenthorpe and Jerry Clay Lane have been locking rock-its and sending balls flying at each other. St. Johns were the first school to charge in with some fantastic play. Four colour coded teams dodged and fired their way through six tightly fought games. The winning team were blue team and are pictured here. Find out how the other schools got on in more pictures. Plans are now in place for an inter-school competition in November. Congratulations to Sally

Sally Mayman from Wrenthorpe School was awarded the 'Above and beyond' award for her role as PLT on Thursday the 18th September 2008.
Sally has been with the partnership from when it first started. There was a chance for some teachers to attend 'Fitbods' training over in Manchester. Sally was one of the staff that volunteered to go.
Sally came back from the training and was very insistant that this scheme was right for our partnership. Sally became the catalyst that made Fitbods happen.
Sally trained up 40 lunchtime supervisors, including some teaching staff. She used her school as a model of good practcie and has often shared her advice with many colleagues. It is because of Sally's enthusiasm that our partnership invested in Fitbods and really it owes a great deal to her as it has supported our PESSCL figures for many years.
Whilst Sally was on maternity, Wrenthorpe, who were are hive of sports activity dwindled slightly. Sally had previously started cheerleading and entered the school in fun runs and much more. This was all suspended.
Upon her return Wrenthrope, once more had risen itself to entering more competitions and are once more, back to Sally-speed. Well done Sally!

Young Leader figures doubled

Outwood Grange College have managed to double their Young Leader's this year. With the help of the two new PE teachers, more children were able to attend the course.
The students were selected by their PE teachers to take part in the day's course. The morning session was an overview of the day, understanding what a 'Young Leader' is and how to be a good role model. The students were also introduced to basic communication and voice projection as well as learning about the S.T.E.P principle.
In the afternoon the students attended practical courses on the S.T.E.P principle led by 4 PE teachers. Later that day, all the students had to plan a practical session which some delivered to their peers.
Overall the day was a complete success. All the studenst were well motivated and very able. Congratulations to all the students and thank you to the teachers who delivered the course.

Year 3/4 Rounders Festival
Thursday 12th June
12 teams entered an exciting competition. The teams played very close matches and sportsnership was excellent throughout.
The JSLA girls did an excellent job in organising.
The final was played between Newton Hill 'A' and Newton Hill 'B', with the 'A' team winning by 1/2 a rounder.
There is no truth in the rumour that Newton Hill 'A' did rounders since Easter instead of Maths, English and science lessons.

A visit by Dr Butler

For the Gifted and Talented students at OGC there was an excellent evening laid on by the PE staff at Holiday Inn.
Dr Richard Butler is a Clinical Psychologist and was the British Olympic Associations Sports Psychologist for all contact sports. In 1992 he joined the British Olympic team for boxing as their sports psychologist at the Olympic Games. He currently works within the NHS in different clinical fields. He has written over 16 books on varying aspects of psychology.
His interactive presentation challenged the students and parents as to how they deal with the build up for competitions and the feedback given after. Top tips were given and have been listed in the download section of this website. Simple examples were given to all as to how to focus on the positive, rather than dwelling on the negative.
Mr Rutter will be getting a copy of the presentation so that students can access all the examples and use them for their own benefit.
An amazing evening.

G&T visit to LMU

Outwood Grange College's Gifted and Talented in PE students were treated to an excellent experience at Leeds Met Uni. As part of the PE departments G&T programme the students had been identified from all year groups and from all sports.
There was an official launch opened by Jill Atkins Mackley, Bronze Olympic Medalist and GB Captain for Hockey a few months ago. This recent trip came about as a way of displaying top class facilities to students and for them to see aspects of the 'science' behind perfomance.
The students were given an informative presentation by Tracey Neville, England Netball Skipper (and sister to Gary and Philip Neville). The students were then shown the biomechanics lab where they had a try with some of the equipment.

Top Link Festival - an interview

Jenna Downing was the Sporting Champion that attended the TOP LINK conference on Friday 11th April. Josh, Fiona and Lewis had a chat with Jenna about her achievements, that report will be on line shortly.
In the meantime Jenna has kindly allowed us to use her speech as a motivational, inspiration for all young leaders out there...
The Importance of Volunteering by Jenna Downing.
Volunteering is a fantatsic way to get involved in sport. It has always played a huge part in my sporting career, whether it has been helping to organise an event or to run a competition to teaching people with their tricks and skills. And I think that because volunteers have played such an important part in helping me develop as an athlete, I now really enjoy putting something back into sport and the community, even if it's only a tiny bit, since at then end of the day, I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for volunteers. Everyone needs to remember that as well as 'giving' to a school or organisation every volunteer will be getting something back in return, as there are many, many benefits to be derived from volunteering:

TOP LINK Leaders trained

On the 10th and 12th of March, Philippa Youlden, a National trainer from the Youth Sport Trust, trained up 20 of Outwood Grange's best leaders.
The day started with an overview of just what the students had in store...to lead over 100 students from different schools through specific training to organise a TOP Link event.
However, none of the students were fazed by this and all embraced the opportunity to show -off their great skills. The students worked together in teams, taking turns in deciding who was going to lead what section of the day.
The leaders also had a chance to plan a practical session, the YST had kindly provided Rock-it-Balls, juggling equipment, skipping ropes, frisbees and many more alternative physical activity ideas for the students to use.
All the leaders seem to up for this challenge and they will be looking mighty smart in the uniform that YST have provided.

Young Sports Ambassadors
As the Youth Sport Trust begin to organise themselves for the 2012 Olympics, it came to light that they would use the Sports Partnership network to target young volunteers who are currenly volunteering in our schools.
It was decided that all partnerships were to select two young sports ambassadors to work in the areas of sport and volunteering.
The Outwood Grange College Sports Partnership selected Kassie Roper and Hannelore Kaye. They have attended a national training day and also a 'Step Into Sport' workshop day. On those days they picked up skills that will help them present and communicate to a variety of audiences and try to be advocates for sport and PE! They have both also been team leaders on the Sports Jam Camps.
Over to Kassie and Hanni...
"Hello! We are Hanni Kaye and Kassie Roper and we are both young sports ambassadors from Outwood Grange College. We will be helping young people to get more involved in sport and we will be giving presentations and giving advice on how to get involved in local teams etc.
We will be coming into different junior schools to give presentations on what we will be doing and how people can get invloved. We will be contacting schools as soon as possible to organise a meeting to encourage children to get more involved in sport"

Healthy Schools Week
Monday 30th January was the first day of four, for the 'Healthy Schools' week for Stanley Grove Primary school.
This four day exhibition was a chance for the whole of Stanley Grove to come up to Outwood Grange College to participate in many different sports. This would include Football, Hockey, Table Tennis, Dance and also many more.
It was also a chance for the CSLA and JSLA students at Outwood Grange to be given a chance to gain some key, first hand knowledge of how to plan and deliver a physical activity session to a group of primary school pupils whose ages were from 5 - 10 years.
On a whole the week was a big success with 100% of those who took part going home with a smile on their face after being given the chance to experience some new fun activities in a some what unfamilliar environment to them.
The Healthy School week benefited all those involved from the youngest of the children to the oldest of the staff (no names, Andrew Green!).
As all children should be given the opportunity to take part in 2 hours of high quality physical education a week, the Healthy Schools week is a great scheme to get children physically active and taking part in sport.
