Southdale win!

Southdale were victors in the year 3 Benchball in a close competition held in November. Teams from Gawthorpe, Holy Trinity and South Parade pushed hard in a very close competition but it was Southdale who adapted best and ran out worthy winners. Southdale went on to represent Ossett in the partnership finals and were unlucky to be narrowly beaten in the final. This meant that effectively Southdale were second out of almost 60 Primaries within the partnership! Well done to all including Mr Wood as "team coach".

Congratulations to Paula

Congratulations to Paula

On Thursday the 18th September Paula Sidebottom from Gawthorpe School was awarded an award for servcie 'Above and beyond' the role of PLT.

Andy Nelson wrote;

Paula has shown great commitment and drive in developing P.E from the outset of the Partnership. During the last 4 years Paula has ensured that the children of Gawthorpe have had plenty of time on the curriculum throughout the key stages, and that there have been a wide variety of extra-curricular clubs led not only by staff, but also by external coaches from many sports. The high profile attached to P.E over the years by Paula and Head Sue Vickerman has truly been an inspiration to the children in their care.

Thank you Paula and well done!

YEARS 1 & 2 GET WET!

The annual activity day for the year 1 & 2 children of Ossett was, for the second year running, held at Gawthorpe Primary, and, for the second year running the weather was atrocious!

The teams of Crocodiles, Elephants, and various other animals didn`t seem to mind however, as they undertook the activities with vigour and not a little "animal noise!".

Almost 300 children took part and they were led by an enthusiastic team of 30 Sports leaders from Ossett Sports College. The teachers from the Primary Schools were again fantastic in their suppotrt for the event, and i would like to offer my thanks to them. Hopefully next year we can avoid the floods!

Family Festivals

Southdale and South Parade come out winners.

Southdale came out as winners of the year 6 Boys Indoor Football in March. In a very close competition any of the Schools could have run out winners, but itwas Southdale who finally saw off a very strong challenge from runners-up HolyTrinity.

South Parade came through as winners in the mixed year 5/6 Rounders in May, narrowly defeating second place Southdale who did extremely well as they fielded a team entirely made up of year 5 children. The standard was high throughout the competition, but the extra "hitting power" of South Parade made them worthy winners.

The Potted Sports for ALL the year 2 children in July was attended by 190 children who all seemed to have a good time! hopefully next years event will be even better. There is also to be a seperate event for all the year 1 children!

The latest Family Festival was the year 6 indoor Football in November.the standard was very high this year, and it ended with a deserved victory for Towngate. Congratulations should also go to the 3 other schools involved - Gawthorpe, Southdale, and particularly to Holy Trinity who fielded 2 teams!

A Table Tennis Exhibition by ex-internationals John Hilton and Brian Keene proved to be a big success,

On Saturday 21st March John Hilton and Brian Keene put on a very entertaining exhibition at Ossett School. The event was put on by Ossett Blues Junior Table-Tennis Club which currently has 26 members and is growing weekly.
John is an ex- European Champion, and Brian an ex-Scotish International. Together as "Table-Toppers" they have put on exhibitions all over the country which have inspired countless young people. A crowd of more than 80 saw unbelievable skills during the hilarious exhibition. The crowd spanned the generations, with the 3 year olds being just as entertained as the Octaganarians.
After the display, which involved a lot of audience participation, all those present were invited to stay on and have a try themselves on the Clubs 8 tables.
New members of the Ossett Junior Blues are welcome, and an adult section is due too start in Sepember. Contact Andrew Nelson at Ossett School fro details on 01924 302830.

Ossett gets Sports College status!

Ossett School is now one of the first Schools in the country to achieve "dual specialism".

Ossett School and 6th-Form College is one of the first Schools in England to achieve specialist status in two areas. Sports College status has now been gained in addition to Technology. This comes in the month when the School also gaines the prestigious Sportsmark for the 4th time!
The new recognition of the work of the Physical Education Department, led by Carole Moorby, will enable further development of Sport, both within the School and the local Community.
Some development of the Sporting Facilities at the School will take place over the coming years which will benefit the whole Community.Who knows, this may be the boost needed to see Ossett Students reaching the 2012 Olympics!
